>> GOOD MORNING, EVERYBODY. RIGHT NOW TWO MINUTES AFTER 10:00. SAVANNAH IS GIVING AN UPDATE ON THE CORONAVIRUS RESPONSE. LET'S GO THERE NOW TO HEAR WHAT IS BEING SAID. >> OUR MISSION TO KEEP SAVANNAH SAFE IN THE MIDST OF THIS HORRIFIC ENVIRONMENTAL STORM THAT CONTINUES TO HOVER OVER OUR STATE AND BELOVED CITY. AS OF NOW WE HAVE 154 CONFIRMED CASES AND FIVE DEATHS ATTRIBUTED TO COVID-19 IN CHAT HAM COUNTY WHICH IS THE MOST IN THE COASTAL HEALTH DISTRICT. WE LEAVE THERE ARE MORE DEATHS OUT THERE AND WE EXPECT THOSE NUMBERS TO RISE. AND AT THIS POINT WE'RE WORKING TOWARDS AND HAVE HAD MODERATE SUCCESS IN PREVENTING AN OUR CURRENT MEDICAL CAPABILITIES. WE ALSO UNDERSTAND FROM THE DATA THAT MORE TESTING BRINGS ON MORE POSITIVE CASES I ASKED TO CONFIRM THE DATA BY ZIP CODE. IT WILL PROVIDE US A MUCH BETTER SNAPSHOT AND IDEA AND GIVE US THE CONFIRMED CASES IN THE SAVANNAH PROPER AND THE CONFIRMED CASES AND WE CAN THEN PROVIDE MUCH BETTER INFORMATION AND EDUCATION TO PEOPLE IN THE SHELTER IN PLACE IS STILL IN EFFECT TO LOWER THE RISK OF CORONAVIRUS FOR EVERYONE UNLESS GOING TO WORK, SHOPPING FOR ESSENTIAL ITEMS OR EXERCISING AT A SAFE DISTANCE FROM OTHERS. LAST WEEK I ASKED THOSE IN SAVANNAH TO WEAR FACE COVERINGS WHEN GOING OUT OF THEIR 679彩票S. I'VE BEEN VERY PLEASED TO SEE MANY OF OUR CITIZENS UTILIZED THEIR CREATIVE SKILLS AND THIS CREATIVITY IS EVIDENT IN SEEING SOME OF THE FACE COVERINGS THAT WE'VE ALL SEEN. MANY OTHER CITIZENS HAVE GRACIOUSLY SEWN OR PROVIDED FACE COVERINGS OR MASKS FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT HAVE THEM AND IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE GOVERNOR'S ORDER, CITY STAFF HAS BEEN WORKING WITH OTHER AGENCIES TO MONITOR AND ENFORCE COMPLIANCE WITH THIS ORDER. AS MANY OF YOU ARE AWARE, THE SAVANNAH POLICE DEPARTMENT IS USING ITS DRONE FLEET TO ENFORCE SOCIAL DISTANCING MESSAGE. THIS MESSAGE SIMPLY REMINDS PEOPLE TO STAY AT LEAST SIX FEET AWAY FROM OTHERS. OFFICERS WILL CONTINUE TO FLY THESE DRONES IN SPECIFIC AREAS WHERE THERE'S AN ISSUE AND IN ACCORDANCE WITH FEDERAL LAW. OUR OPERATORS ARE TRAINED PROFESSIONALS WITH F.A.A. PILOT LICENSES THESE WEEK OUR MOUNTAIN PATROL OFFICERS CONTINUE TO REMIND CITIZENS TO OBSERVE SOCIAL DISTANCING AND ALSO PLEASED TO SAY WE PENNED 24 NEW POLICE OFFICERS THIS PAST FRIDAY AND THEY'RE NOW ON THE STREETS. IT'S DURING THESE DIFFICULT TIMES WE SEE THE PROFESSIONALISM AND DEDICATION OUR EMPLOYEES, OUR ASSOCIATES ARE A MOST VALUABLE ASSET AND WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR THEIR DEDICATION AND PROFESSIONALISM NOW COMPENSATING THEM FOR THIS EXTRAORDINARY EFFORT DURING THE CITY'S LEADERSHIP AND BUDGET TEAM HAS WORKED QUICKLY AND DILIGENTLY TO ENSURE WE'RE MAINTAINING A BALANCED CITY BUDGET FINANCIALLY SUPPORTING OUR PEOPLE NOW AND SUPPORTING FUTURE LAYOFFS OR FURLOUGHS AND DUE TO THE CITY'S DECADES LONG PRACTICE OF CONSERVATIVE BUDGETING AND MAINTAINING A HEALTHY, FUN BALANCE CONTINGENCY AND RESERVES. PAT MONAGHAN OUR CITY MANAGER SIGNED A ORDER TO PERMIT HAZARD PAY FOR MOST CITY EMPLOYEES APRIL 12-MAY 29 OF $2.50 PER HOUR WHICH EQUATES TO ABOUT $100 A WEEK. FOR THOSE EMPLOYEES THAT ARE ACTUALLY ON SITE WORKING. THAT EXEMPTS THE CITY COUNCIL, MANAGER AND CITY ATTORNEY BUT EVERYONE ELSE IS ELIGIBLE FOR PROVIDED THEY'RE WORKING AT WORK. OUR SANITATION DEPARTMENT IS CURRENTLY NOT COLLECTING RESIDENTIAL YARD WASTE BUT WE ARE WORKING ON A PLAN TO PICK IT UP. WE HAVE CONTACTED A WASTE HURRICANE DEBRIS TO ALLEVIATE SOME OF THE YARD TRASH STARTING TO PILE UP. WE'RE LOOKING AT PRICING FOR ONE OR TWO COLLECTIONS WHILE CITY PICKUP IS SUSPENDED. LAST WEEK I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT CAROLINA HOSPITAL AND MEMORIAL HEALTH TO PERSONALLY THANK THE HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS THAT SUPPORT THEM IN DIETARY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES AND MAINTENANCE AND PURCHASING FOR THE EXTRAORDINARY WORK THAT THEY ARE DOING TO MANAGE DURING THESE EXTRAORDINARY TIMES. FOR WHAT I HAVE OBSERVED AND BEEN SHOWN, OUR HEALTH CARE COMMUNITY IS PREPARED AND READY TO MEET THE CHALLENGES OF THE DAYS AHEAD. AS LONG AS THEY ARE NOT OVERWHELMED BY DELUGE OF POSITIVE CASES. LAST WEEK I ALSO VISITED HUNTER ARMY AIRFIELD TO VIEW THEIR MOBILE TESTING OPERATION. THEY ARE TESTING OUR ACTIVE DUTY SOLDIERS, DEPENDENTS AND RETIREES. THEY'VE TAKEN EXTRAORDINARY MEASURES AS WELL TO PROTECT OUR SOLDIERS AND THEIR FAMILIES, MANY ARE WHICH IN SOME STAGE OF ACTIVE DEPLOYMENT. THESE ARE OUR MODERN DAY HEROES, THE HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL, THE SOLDIER, THE THE POLICE OFFICER, THE FIREFIGHTERS, SANITATION WORKER, THE CITY EMPLOYEE, THE CHILDCARE PROVIDER, THE INTERPRETER, THE MEMBERS OF THE MEDIA. SO WE CONTINUE TO THANK ALL OF YOU FOR WHAT YOU'RE DOING. THE MORE WE STAY APART NOW, THE SOONER WE WILL BE BACK TOGETHER AND HOPEFULLY WE'RE USING THIS TIME TO REALLY APPRECIATE THE PRESENCE OF EACH OTHER. I THINK THIS QUIET TIME REALLY CREATES OPPORTUNITIES FOR US TO BE GRATEFUL FOR SOME THINGS WE HAVE. WE HAVE YOUNG PEOPLE WHO COULDN'T WAIT TO GET OUT OF SCHOOL BUT NOW CAN'T WAIT TO GET BACK TO SCHOOL. WE HAVE PARENTS WHO WANT TO SEE KIDS MORE AND NOW THEY WISH THEIR KIDS COULD GO SOMEWHERE. WE HAVE PARENTS WHO THOUGHT THAT TEACHING WAS EASY UNTIL NOW THEY HAVE TO DO 679彩票SCHOOLING AND THEY FIND OUT THAT IT'S NOT. WE HAVE FAMILIES THAT, YOU KNOW, WEREN'T AS CLOSE AS THEY WERE BUT ALL OF A SUDDEN ARE NOW FINDING A NEED TO BE PHYSICALLY CONNECTED. SO THIS IS THIS UNIQUE TIME IN OUR HISTORY HAS TAUT US SOME VERY UNIQUE LESSONS AND CERTAINLY I'VE RECOGNIZED THE IMPORTANCE OF THE PEOPLE THAT WORK FOR US, THE PEOPLE WHO SERVE FOR US, AND REALLY JUST A NECESSITY, JUST BEING IN THE PRESENCE OF PEOPLE. I THINK GOD HAS CREATED US TO BE TOGETHER. AND I THINK THIS TIME APART HAS MADE US RECOGNIZE JUST HOW IMPORTANT THAT IS. AND REALLY ULTIMATELY AS BAD AS THINGS ARE, JUST HOW BLESSED SAVANNAH STILL IS. IT'S CONCERNING. BUT YET WE STILL CAN BE SO MUCH WORSE. SO SOON WE'LL BE IN CONTACT WE WANT TO PROTECT YOU AS WELL. AVENUES IN WHICH TO HOLD THESE TYPES OF BRIEFINGS. BECAUSE I WANT YOU TO BE OK. I'M GLAD ALL OF Y'ALL HAVE ON MASKS SO YOU'RE PROTECTING ME. I APPRECIATE THAT. AND CITY COUNCIL WILL SOON RESUME ITS WORK BY HOLDING OUR WE ALREADY HAVE ESTABLISHED A PRIORITY SCHEDULE SO WE'LL BE WORKING WITH THE CITY MANAGER AND GET BACK ABOUT THE BUSINESS OF OUR CITY. I THANK OUR MEMBERS OF OUR COUNCIL FOR CONTINUING TO BE DILIGENT, FOR CONTINUING TO BE OUT THERE, TO CONTINUE TO ADVOCATE ON BEHALF OF ALL OF OUR CITIZENS AND I WILL TELL YOU THAT BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN SO OUT THERE, BECAUSE THEY'VE BEEN SO ACCESSIBLE, BECAUSE THEY'VE BEEN SO DILIGENT, PEOPLE ASK THEM QUESTIONS ABOUT THINGS WE HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT. WE DO NOT KNOW WHEN YOU'RE GOING TO GET YOUR CHECK. WE DON'T KNOW IF YOU'RE ELLGIDGE -- ELIGIBLE FOR A CHECK OR YOUR FOOD STAMPS OR YOUR LANDLORD ISSUES. BECAUSE THEY REALIZE WE'RE ACCESSIBLE OR AVAILABLE. I'LL TELL YOU OUR COUNCIL MEMBERS WILL DO THE BEST THEY CAN TO GET THAT INFORMATION BUT THERE ARE ALSO OTHER ELECTIVE REPRESENTATIVES WHOSE JOB IT IS TO PROVIDE YOU THAT INFORMATION AND WE'RE HOPING THAT THEY WILL DO THAT. SO WE WILL CONTINUE TO KEEP THE FAITH BUT WE WILL ALSO CONTINUE TO FOLLOW THE SIGNS. WITH THAT BEING SAID, MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND MAY GOD CONTINUE THAT IS MY PREPARED REMARKS AND I'LL ENTERTAIN ANY QUESTIONS AT THIS TIME. REPORTER: I HAVE A QUESTION ON -- AT THIS POINT DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY RESTAURANTS HAVE CLOSED AND HOW MANY OF THOSE OF HELP FROM THE SMALL BUSINESS ASSOCIATION? MAYOR JOHNSON: WE HAVE NOT THE SLIGHTEST IDEA. AGAIN, FOR US, THE CHALLENGE HAS BEEN WHEN THE GOVERNOR CAME UP WITH HIS ORDER IT WAS HARDER TO TRACK THEM. WE KNOW THAT IT WAS CONFUSING AT FIRST FROM THE BUSINESS OWNERS I HEARD FROM IN TERMS OF THE PAPERWORK AND THEIR LOCAL BASE HAD TO BE RAMPED UP TO THAT BUT WE WILL TRY TO GET SOME TYPE OF REPORT AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT. WE KNOW SOME PEOPLE HAVE GOTTEN THEIR CHECKS, WE'VE HEARD THAT. REPORTER: YOU MENTIONED THE DRONES WILL BE FLYING. HOW ABOUT THINGS BEING -- [INAUDIBLE] MAYOR JOHNSON: IT'S GOTTEN PROGRESSIVELY BETTER THROUGHOUT THE WEEK, IN FACT THE LAST TWO WEEKS HAVE GOTTEN BETTER. PEOPLE HAVE MADE A BIG ISSUE ABOUT THE DRONES. THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS WE'VE ALWAYS HAD THE DRONES. IN FACT, WHEN YOU HAVE A PREMIERE POLICE DEPARTMENT, A STATE-OF-THE-ART POLICE DEPARTMENT, THESE ARE CRIME FIGHTING TOOLS. AND SO IN TERMS OF OFFICER SAFETY, WE HAVE THIS TECHNOLOGY THAT WE'RE ABLE TO DELIVER A MESSAGE WHILE PROTECTING THAT OFFICER. AND WE WILL COVER A LOT MORE GROUND. NOW, THERE ARE RULES AS THEY OPERATE TO PROTECT PRIVACY, AND SO IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION, WE'RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO FOLLOW THOSE RULES. SO YOU SHOULD EXPECT TO SEE A DRONE LOOKING THROUGH YOUR FRONT WINDOW. I HEARD PEOPLE ALL OVER THE COUNTRY, WE'RE BEING TYRANTS AND DOING BIG BROTHER, NO, WE'RE OPERATING WITHIN THE LAW. THE LAW ALLOWS US TO DO THAT AND THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS THIS, WE ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF A HEALTH EMERGENCY, A MEDICAL EMERGENCY. A STATE OF THE ORDER EMERGENCY HERE IN OUR COMMUNITY. WE'RE GOING TO USE WHATEVER METHODS ARE AT OUR DISPOSAL. THAT INCLUDES POLICE OFFICERS ON SCOOTERS AND BIKES TO BE ABLE TO ENGAGE PEOPLE WHERE THEY ARE AND TRY TO BREAK UP SOME OF THESE THINGS. AGAIN, WE'RE TRYING OUR BEST TO BE ABLE TO STEM THAT TIDE. AS LONG AS WE KEEP IT MADGEABLE. WE'RE STILL ABOUT -- MANAGEABLE. WE'RE STILL ABOUT TWO WEEKS BEHIND NEW YORK WE ESTIMATE. WHEN THE UPTICK HAPPENS, WE'RE ABLE TO DEPLOY OUR HEALTH CARE CAPABILITIES. REPORTER: SOMETHING TO NOTE ABOUT THAT, MAYOR, IS THE DRONE WASN'T YOUR FIRST ANSWER AND ALL THESE TOOLS YOU BROUGHT IN WEREN'T THE FIRST ANSWER SO CAN YOU KIND OF TALK ABOUT -- WHAT GOT THE CITY AT THIS POINT OF HAVING TO DO THIS? PEOPLE ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT IT BUT YOU OBVIOUSLY FEEL LIKE YOU NEED TO USE THESE TOOLS TO GIVE PEOPLE THE SOCIAL DISTANCE. MATTER IS THIS IS THE GOVERNOR'S ORDER. I MEAN, WE'RE ENFORCING THE GOVERNOR'S ORDER. AGAIN, I'M PROUD OF OUR POLICE DEPARTMENT. I'M PROUD OF OUR FIRE DEPARTMENT. AND THIS IS REALLY WHAT OUR CITIZENS PAY FOR. THEY PAY FOR THE STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY. WE COOPERATE WITH CHATHAM COUNTY. WE USE THESE DRONES FOR SEARCH AND RESCUE AND FOR A VARIETY OF PEOPLE HEAR WHAT THEY WANT TO HEAR. PEOPLE NEED SOMEBODY TO BE MAD AT BECAUSE HE'S IN THE SITUATION AND IF HE WANTS TO BE MAD AT ME, I SIGNED UP FOR IT, BUT THE REALITY IS WE'RE GOING TO DO WHAT IS NECESSARY TO KEEP PEOPLE SAFE BECAUSE ON THE FLIP SIDE ABOUT THAT, IF WE DON'T, THEN WE'RE ALSO CRITICIZED THAT WE DIDN'T DO ENOUGH TO KEEP PEOPLE SAFE. I SLEEP WELL AT NIGHT RECOGNIZING THAT OUR CITY IS USING ALL THE TOOLS IN OUR ARSENAL, ALL OF THEM, FROM OFFICERS WALKING UP TO PEOPLE, THAT IS GOING INTO BUSINESSES AND SAYING HEY, YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO DO THIS. WE'RE GOING TO USE ALL THOSE TOOLS. AGAIN, IT'S WAY BIGGER THAN DRONES. IT'S REALLY THE END PRODUCT OF KEEPING SAVANNAH'S NUMBERS DOWN. THAT'S ALL I'M CONCERNED ABOUT. REPORTER: MY OTHER QUESTION FOR YOU IS DO YOU HAVE ANY UPDATE ABOUT THE 679彩票LESS POPULATION IN SAVANNAH AND WHAT YOU'RE DOING TO PROTECT THEM? MAYOR JOHNSON: WE'RE STILL WORKING I THINK DILIGENTLY TO BE ABLE TO DO TWO THINGS. ONE, TO IDENTIFY AND STAFF UP INFRASTRUCTURE UP AND STAFF UP NOT ONLY A TEMPORARY SOLUTION THAT WILL LEAD TO A LONGER TERM SOLUTION. I DON'T KNOW IF YOU HAVE ANY -- SOCIAL DISTANCING. >> I WON'T TOUCH YOUR STUFF, I PROMISE. MR. MONAHAN: TO LET THE CITY KNOW, THE CITY STARTED WORKING WITH THE 679彩票LESS AUTHORITY TO DISTRIBUTE M.R.E.'S TO THE 679彩票LESS CAMPS AND THAT DISTRIBUTION WILL BEGIN TODAY. IS WORKING WITH THE TRADE CENTER AUTHORITY ON MEAL PREPARATION FOR THE 679彩票LESS CAMPS, TO PROVIDE BOTH BREAKFAST AND LUNCH, APPROXIMATE 400 A DAY, WHICH THE 679彩票LESS AUTHORITY WILL ASSIST IN THE DISTRIBUTION. IN ADDITION TO THAT THE CITY WILL START WORKING -- WE'VE BEEN TRYING TO ADVANCE AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE THE SCHEDULE ON TEMPORARY HOUSING, BASICALLY THEIR TENTS BUT WE ARE GOING TO PROVIDE COTS, UP TO 200 OF THEM, BOTH TO HELP QUARANTINE THE 679彩票LESS BUT ANY 679彩票LESS BUT AS THE MAYOR SAID THAT'S THE FIRST PHASE OF A LONGER TERM SOLUTION THAT WILL LOOK AT CREATING MORE PERMANENT HOUSING AT THESE SO THE CITY WILL START WORK ON ONE IN PARTICULAR I THINK THE MEDIA COVERED A COUPLE WEEKS AGO BUT THERE ARE OTHERS THAT THE CITY ALSO IS CONSIDERING. SO YES, THAT WORK IS ONGOING AND THE CITY IS LOOKING AT IMPROVED COORDINATION AMONG THE 679彩票LESS AGENCIES AND WORKING WITH THE 679彩票LESS TO THAT EXTENT. REPORTER: HAVE THERE BEEN ANY TALKS OF PORT-A-POTTIES? MR. MONOHAN: WHEN THIS CAMP IS CREATED IT WILL INCLUDE PORT-A-POTTIES AND HOUSING AND SHOOT AND SHELTER WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE AT THAT SITE. WE'RE GOING TO A LOT OF THE CAMPS AND DOING FOOD DISTRIBUTIONS NOT ONLY THROUGH THE M.R.E.'S BUT PREPACKAGED MEALS WITH THE TRADE CENTER AUTHORITY. WE'RE TRYING TO GET TO A MENU AT A AFFORDABLE PRICE AND WILL BE REIMBURSED BY FEMA AND THE 12% THE CITY WILL PROVIDE. AND THE CITY'S OUT OF EXPENSE WILL BE MINIMAL. REPORTER: IS THERE A TIME LINE? MR. MONAHAN: WE'VE BEEN TRYING TO PRICE. AT THIS TIME WE ARE UNABLE TO FIND SUBCONTRACTORS. WE'VE HAD TWO LOOK AT THE SITE AND GIVE US PROPOSALS. I TOLD THEM TO PULL THING TRIGGER, AS SOON AS THEY'RE READY, LET THEM GO. THE PRICE IS AFFORDABLE BUT IT'S DIFFICULT TRYING TO GET SUBCONTRACTORS AND CONTRACTORS WORKING AT THIS DAY AND TIME. THEY ALSO HAVE TO OBEY SOCIAL DISTANCING REQUIREMENTS AND ALSO ARE FINDING DIFFICULTY FINDING WORKERS. A LOT OF FOLKS DON'T WANT TO WORK THIS TIME OF YEAR. ANYTHING ELSE? MAYOR JOHNSON: I THINK THE BLESSING IN THIS IS THIS IS CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR US TO REALLY MORE AGGRESSIVELY AND PROACTIVELY ADDRESS ISSUES OF 679彩票LESSNESS. I THINK FOR US WE DON'T WANT TO MAKE IT A MOVEMENT. SO IF WE'RE ABLE TO PUT ENOUGH INFRASTRUCTURE IN PLACE, WE'RE ABLE TO TRANSITION NOT ONLY A TEMPORARY SITUATION INTO A MUCH MORE PERMANENT SOLUTION, AND AS THE CITY MANAGER SAID AND I'VE INSISTED, I THINK THAT OUR 679彩票LESS AGENCIES HAVE TO WORK BETTER IN CONCERT WITH EACH OTHER. WE KNOW THERE'S SOME MORE MONEY COMING FROM THE CARES ACT TO TO BE MUCH MORE COORDINATED AND COMPREHENSIVE AS IT RELATES TO A PLAN. IT DOESN'T BENEFIT US TO HAVE PEOPLE WORKING IN DIFFERENT SILOS. IT NEEDS TO COME TOGETHER. WE'RE USING THE COLLECTIVE STRENGTH OF THE CITY TO BRING THE OTHER THING THAT'S BEEN ON MY MIND AND I'VE BEEN WORKING WITH OUR FEDERAL PARTNERS, AS YOU KNOW, WITH THE STIMULUS PACKAGE, SO TO SPEAK, IT ONLY AFFECTS -- IT IS GIVEN DIRECTLY TO CITIES OVER $500 -- OVER 500,000 PEOPLE. THAT IS 500,000 PEOPLE. AND I DON'T BELIEVE THERE'S ONE IN SOUTH CAROLINA. NOT WITH 500,000 PEOPLE. WHICH MEANS IT GOES TO THE STATE AND THE STATE DIVVIES IT UP TO CITIES. WE KNOW BEST WHAT TO DO WITH THESE FUNDS. WITH THE NATIONAL CITIES AND U.S. CONFERENCE OF MAYORS AND A VARIETY OF OTHER GROUPS OF REALLY BEING ABLE TO CREATE A OPPORTUNITY FOR THESE FUND TO COME DIRECTLY TO CITIES. THE WHOLE STATE OF GEORGIA LOSES OUT IN THIS SITUATION BECAUSE AGAIN, WE DON'T HAVE A CITY IN GEORGIA THAT IS HALF A MILLION PEOPLE. THIS BENEFITS NORTHERN STATES AND AGAIN, CITIES LIKE SIZED CITY WOULD AGAIN HAVE TO GO THROUGH ANOTHER BUREAUCRATIC PROCESS IN ORDER TO GET THOSE FUND. WE HAVE A WAY TO DISTRIBUTE THEM BECAUSE WE KNOW LOCALLY WHAT OUR NEEDS ARE AND SO THEREFORE, WE NEED -- WE'RE GOING TO NEED FEDERAL HELP TO HELP MAKE THAT HAPPEN. REPORTER: MR. MAYOR, WE'VE GOTTEN SOME CONCERNS ABOUT THE POSTAL TRANSITIONAL PROTECTOR BUT VIRUS CASES, I THINK IT'S MANAGED BY THE STATE AND HAVE YOU HEARD ANYTHING LIKE THIS ABOUT THIS? MAYOR JOHNSON: I'M HEARING AND AGAIN, YOU KNOW, IN THIS CASE WE HAVE TO STAY IN OUR LANE AND A COASTAL TRANSITIONAL CENTER IS A STATE INSTITUTION AND OPERATED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS AND THE STATE OF GEORGIA. THEREFORE, IT IS THEIR ISSUE. WE HAVE NO RIGHT TO COME IN AND STAY ANYTHING BUT I'VE HEARD FROM PARENTS AND LOVED ONES THEN I'LL HEAR ABOUT A POSITIVE CASE IN NOT ONLY THIS PLACE BUT OTHER PLACES AS WELL AND AGAIN, AT THEIR STATE FACILITIES, THERE'S NOTHING WE CAN DO ABOUT I'D ADVISE YOUR LOVED ONES TO CONTACT THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT WHICH IS ANOTHER STATE AGENCY. ALL RIGHT. WELL, THANK YOU ALL AGAIN SO MUCH. WE APPRECIATE WHAT YOU'RE DOING. MRS. ZOLA WILL BE IN CONTACT WITH YOU ABOUT HOW WE'LL PLAY TAKE CARE OF YOURSELVES, OK. CLEAN THOSE CAMERAS. THANK YOU. >> AND OF COURSE THAT HAS BEEN SAVANNAH MAYOR VAN JOHNSON FOR THE LAST SEVERAL MINUTES UPDATING THE CITY ABOUT THE EFFORTS, PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN THE CONTROL AND PREVENT THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS. ABOUT, FIRST UP HE SAYS HE BELIEVES THERE ARE ACTUALLY MORE DEATHS AND MORE CASES IN SUPPORTED. HE ACTUALLY IS ASKING THE STATE TO START TO RELEASE THOSE CASES AND DEATHS BY ZIP CODE SO THAT SAVANNAH CITY LEADERS CAN BETTER KNOW WHERE THESE THINGS ARE HAPPENING. HE SAYS THE MORE TESTS THAT GET PERFORMED, THE MORE POSITIVE CASES SEEM TO SHOW UP. BUT ON A MORE POSITIVE NOTE, THE MAYOR ALSO SAID HE'S VERY PLEASED TO SEE MORE PEOPLE OUT AND ABOUT NOW AT LEAST WEARING FACE COVERINGS AND MASKS. AND THAT HE BELIEVES IS HELPING SLOW THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS. HE ALSO SAYS, THOUGH, THAT EVEN IN THE PARK -- SOMETHING THAT'S BEEN A PROBLEM HERE IN THE CITY FOR THE LAST SEVERAL WEEKS, HE SAYS IT IS IMPROVING EVEN IN CITY PARKSS. HE'S NOW STARTING TO SEE MORE PEOPLE MAINTAINING THAT SOCIAL DISTANCE. EVEN SO, HE SAYS THE CITY IS AND WILL CONTINUE TO USE DRONES THAT HAVE A PRERECORDED MESSAGE FLYING THEM OVER THE PARKS REMINDING PEOPLE TO KEEP THEIR DISTANCE. HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THOSE DRONES AND HOW DISRUPTIVE THEY SAY THEY ARE TO THEM TRYING TO ENJOY THESE PARKS, HE SAYS IT IS RIGHT NOW A VERY -- A VERY NECESSARY THING TO MAKE SURE PEOPLE MAINTAIN AGAIN THAT SOCIAL DISTANCE. HE ALSO SAYS CITY WORKERS ARE NOW GOING TO GET HAZARD PAY FOR THE RISKS THEY INCUR JUST BY COMING TO WORK THESE DAYS. NOT A LOT OF NEW INFORMATION AS FAR AS BIG CHANGES COMING OUT OF THIS NEWS CONFERENCE BUT DEFINITELY AN UPDATE W
